Hello, I am Jasper Bredohl, a master's student in biology in Zurich. During a study period in the Pacific Northwest, I became increasingly interested in birding and photography.
Like many birders, I use eBird and Merlin, alongside field guides and my own comparisons. Ardea is meant to be more than another checklist. It records the birds I have photographed, how my photography develops and what I learn along the way. Over time, I hope it can also be useful for looking up birds from some of the regions I visit.
The life list is organised by family and species. Each species has a short profile, basic information, a range map and the photographs I have chosen to keep. The journal places past sightings in the context of individual outings. The separate Landscapes gallery is a tighter photographic edit of the habitats and environments around them.
Not every photograph supports a certain identification. I usually leave doubtful records out, but mistakes in identification or image sorting can still happen. Corrections, bug reports and other comments are always welcome at ardea.birds@gmail.com.
The name Ardea comes from the heron genus of the same name, which includes the Great Blue Heron shown on the front page.
Enjoy exploring the site.
