New World Vultures

Seven species, restricted to the Americas. They resemble the vultures of the Old World closely but are not close relatives: the similarity is convergence on the same way of making a living. The head is bare, an adaptation to feeding inside carcasses, and the feet are weak and cannot grasp. Several species find carrion by smell, which is rare among birds and absent in Old World vultures.
