Tyrant Flycatchers

The largest bird family in the world, with more than 400 species, all of them in the Americas. Most hunt by sallying out from a perch and returning to it, and many carry rictal bristles around the gape whose function is still argued over. The genus Empidonax is notorious even among specialists: its species are near-identical in plumage and are separated reliably only by voice.
