Waxwings

Three species, all of the northern forests. The family is named for the red waxy tips on the secondaries: flattened, pigmented feather shafts of a kind found in no other group of birds. All are specialists on fruit to a degree unusual among songbirds, and all are nomadic rather than migratory, appearing in numbers wherever berry crops are heavy and being absent entirely in other years.
