Woodpeckers

About 240 species, absent only from Australia and Madagascar. Everything about them is built for working wood: a chisel bill, stiffened tail feathers used as a prop, two toes forward and two back, and a hyoid apparatus that wraps around the skull to anchor a tongue far longer than the bill itself. Nearly all excavate their own cavities, and in doing so provide nest sites for many species that cannot dig.
