The Boreal Chickadee is a quiet resident of northern conifer forests. It searches bark, twigs and needle clusters for insects and seeds and stores food in many separate caches for the cold season. The brown cap, grey collar and warm cinnamon flanks separate it from most other North American chickadees. Pairs usually excavate or enlarge a cavity in soft, decaying wood.

ID tip: The brown cap is the quickest field mark. Also note the small white cheek, grey nape, black bib and warm buff flanks; Black-capped Chickadees have a black cap and cleaner white sides.
