The Grey Wagtail is closely tied to running water, where it searches rocks and banks for insects. Despite its name, the lemon-yellow underparts and exceptionally long tail are often the first features noticed.

ID tip: Look for grey upperparts, a pale eyebrow, yellow underparts and a very long tail that is constantly pumped. The similarly coloured Yellow Wagtail has a shorter tail and favours open fields rather than rocky streams.
