Lincoln's Sparrow breeds in damp, densely vegetated habitats across northern and western North America. It usually stays low in grasses or shrubs and often feeds on the ground under cover. The finely streaked buff breast and neat facial pattern give it a cleaner appearance than the heavier-marked Song Sparrow.

ID tip: Fine dark streaks across a buff-colored breast, a gray face and a pale eye ring are the key marks. Song Sparrows are usually more coarsely streaked and lack the same clean buff wash.
