A large white bird with black flight feathers and long red legs and bill. It searches meadows and shallow wetlands for small animals, walking slowly before striking with its bill. Its broad wings carry it on rising air, and pairs advertise their large stick nests with bill-clattering. Many European birds migrate south, although some populations now remain throughout the year.
