Rails, Gallinules & Coots

Around 150 species, mostly secretive wetland birds with laterally compressed bodies that slip through dense vegetation. Their long toes spread weight over mud and floating plants; coots add broad lobes that make them strong swimmers. The chicks are precocial and leave the nest soon after hatching.
