The Eurasian Moorhen is a widespread rail of vegetated freshwater across Europe, Africa and Asia. It swims readily but also walks across floating plants on long toes and frequently flicks its white undertail while moving.

ID tip: Adults are dark slate-brown with a red-and-yellow bill, white flank stripe and white undertail. Juveniles are browner and lack the bright frontal shield, but retain the long toes and pale flank markings.
