The Common Hoopoe is a distinctive ground-feeding bird found from Europe and Africa across much of Asia. It probes bare soil with its long curved bill and often nests in tree holes, walls or other cavities.

ID tip: The long downcurved bill, orange-buff crest and bold black-and-white wings are unmistakable. In flight the broad rounded wings produce a loose, butterfly-like action.
