The Double-crested Cormorant is a large dark waterbird with an orange throat patch and a long hooked bill. It occurs on coasts, lakes and large rivers across much of North America. The species dives for fish and propels itself underwater with its feet. It often rests with its wings spread after feeding. The two short head crests are visible mainly on adults early in the breeding season.

ID tip: Orange-yellow throat pouch plus a kinked neck in flight clinches it against the dark-faced, straight-necked Pelagic Cormorant.
