The Great Blue Heron is a large North American heron with long legs, a heavy bill and blue-grey plumage. It usually feeds in shallow water, where it stands still or walks slowly before striking at fish. It also takes amphibians, small mammals and other available prey. The species often nests in colonies, with large stick nests placed high in trees. In flight, it holds its neck folded and trails its long legs behind the body.
