The Red Kite is a large European raptor that searches open country with buoyant, economical flight. It takes live prey but also scavenges extensively and has recovered strongly in several regions after historic persecution.

ID tip: The deeply forked reddish tail, long angled wings and pale panels on the underwing are distinctive. It looks lighter and more graceful in flight than most buzzards.
