The Red-backed Shrike breeds in open, scrubby country across Europe and western Asia and migrates to southern Africa for the non-breeding season. Like other shrikes, it watches from prominent perches and may store prey on thorns.

ID tip: Adult males show a grey head, black mask and chestnut back. Females and juveniles are browner, with finely barred or scalloped underparts and the same stout, hooked bill.
