The Ruby-crowned Kinglet is a tiny, active songbird that breeds mainly in northern and mountain conifer forests. It searches foliage almost continuously, often flicking its wings as it picks small insects from leaves and twigs. The male's red crown patch is usually hidden and may be raised during display or agitation.

ID tip: Look for a broken white eye ring, a white wing bar with a black bar below it and a plain olive face. The often-concealed ruby crown is useful when visible but is not needed for identification.
