The Rufous Hummingbird is a small hummingbird with a compact body and a straight bill. Adult males are largely rust-coloured with an iridescent orange-red throat, while females are greener. It feeds on nectar and small insects and aggressively defends rich flower patches and feeders. The species breeds as far north as Alaska and winters mainly in Mexico. Its migration is exceptionally long relative to its body size.

ID tip: Males are bright coppery rufous on the back, not green as in Anna's, with a fiery orange gorget; females and young are green-backed with rufous flanks and are all but inseparable from Allen's. Famously pugnacious at feeders.
