The Spotted Flycatcher is a quietly coloured insect-eater that breeds across much of Europe and western Asia before migrating to sub-Saharan Africa. It often returns to the same exposed perch after making a short flight to catch an insect.

ID tip: Look for the upright posture, long wings, plain grey-brown plumage and fine streaking on the forehead and upper breast. Its repeated flycatching sallies are often the quickest clue.
