Pipilo maculatus

The Spotted Towhee is a large sparrow with a dark head, white wing spots, rust-coloured flanks and red eyes. It lives in dense scrub, woodland edges and gardens across western North America. The species feeds on seeds, insects and fruit by scratching backward through leaf litter with both feet. The nest is usually placed on or close to the ground. Females are often browner and less glossy than males.
