The Western Cattle Egret is a compact white heron of Europe, Africa and western Asia that feeds mainly on land. It often follows cattle, sheep and machinery to catch insects flushed from grass and soil.

ID tip: It is shorter-necked and more compact than other white egrets, with a relatively short stout bill. Breeding birds develop orange-buff plumes on the crown, breast and back.
