Kingfishers

Around 120 species, most of them tropical and, despite the name, many of them not fishers at all, the majority hunt insects and lizards in dry woodland far from water. All share the same build: large head, long dagger-like bill, short legs and partly fused forward toes. Nearly all nest in burrows excavated in earth banks or termite mounds. Only one species occurs across most of North America.
