Pelicans

Eight species worldwide. The throat pouch is a dip net rather than a container: it engulfs fish and water together, and the water is drained off before anything is swallowed. Most species fish cooperatively at the surface, herding fish into the shallows in a coordinated line; only the Brown Pelican plunge-dives. All are large, long-winged, highly efficient soarers, and all breed colonially.
