The American Goldfinch is a small finch with a short conical bill and strongly undulating flight. Breeding males are bright yellow with a black cap, while females and winter birds are much duller. It feeds mainly on seeds, especially those of thistles and other composite plants. Breeding begins relatively late in summer, when seeds are abundant. Unlike most songbirds, the young are fed largely on regurgitated seed.
