Fringillidae

Roughly 230 species. Small songbirds with conical bills built for cracking seed, and the depth of the bill tracks closely the size of seed a species can handle, which is why the family has become a standard subject in the study of adaptation. Many are nomadic rather than migratory, moving in response to seed crops that fail unpredictably. Flight is deeply undulating, with a call given at each rise.
