The Common Buzzard is a broad-winged raptor widespread across Europe and parts of Asia. It hunts from perches or by soaring over open ground and varies exceptionally widely in plumage from very dark to almost white.

ID tip: Look for broad rounded wings, a short neck and a relatively short rounded tail. Many show a dark carpal patch and a pale breast-band, but shape is more reliable than colour because the plumage is so variable.
