The Little Grebe is a compact diving bird of freshwater wetlands across Europe, Africa and Asia. It often stays close to emergent vegetation and slips underwater rather than flying when disturbed.

ID tip: Its tiny size, rounded rear, short bill and fluffy pale stern are distinctive. Breeding adults show chestnut cheeks and neck with a yellow gape patch; non-breeding birds are much paler and browner.
