The Marsh Sandpiper is a slender long-legged wader that breeds in steppe wetlands from eastern Europe into central Asia. On migration and in winter it feeds in shallow water from the Mediterranean to Africa, southern Asia and Australia.

ID tip: Look for an exceptionally slim straight bill, very long pale legs and a delicate body. It resembles a small Greenshank but is finer throughout and shows a narrow white wedge up the back in flight.
