Sandpipers

Roughly 90 species, and the family responsible for the longest migrations undertaken by any birds. Bills range from short and straight to long and decurved, and their tips carry dense pressure receptors that locate prey buried in sediment by remote touch, without seeing or touching it. Most breed at high latitudes and winter on estuaries, concentrating at a few staging sites where much of a population may be present at once.
