The Short-billed Dowitcher is a medium-sized shorebird with a long straight bill and compact body. It feeds by probing rapidly in soft mud and shallow water. Coastal mudflats and estuaries are used more often than by the Long-billed Dowitcher. The species breeds in three separate northern regions and migrates along both North American coasts. Voice is usually more reliable for identification than the overlapping bill lengths of the two dowitchers.

ID tip: Listen rather than measure: a mellow, rolling 'tu-tu-tu' means Short-billed; habitat helps too, as this is the tideflat dowitcher while Long-billed prefers fresh water.
