A sociable mountain corvid with glossy black plumage, a short yellow bill and red legs. It feeds on open ground and often gathers around settlements, taking invertebrates in summer and more fruit and seeds later in the year. In flight its broad wings and relatively long tail give it a buoyant silhouette.

ID tip: The short yellow bill, red legs and glossy black plumage distinguish it from the Red-billed Chough, which has a longer, curved red bill.
