The Wood Sandpiper is a small long-legged wader that breeds in northern Eurasian bogs and winters mainly in Africa and southern Asia. During migration it favours shallow freshwater and flooded vegetation rather than exposed coastal mudflats.

ID tip: Look for yellowish legs, a fine straight bill, spotted brown upperparts and a strong pale eyebrow extending behind the eye. It is smaller and more delicate than Green Sandpiper and lacks that species' sharply contrasting dark upperparts.
