Between forest and shore

Two more days on the San Juan Islands, this time between forest, open country and coast. On the first day, a Pileated Woodpecker was the biggest surprise. A Red Crossbill became the second new species. The following morning, Wild Turkeys and several Eurasian Collared-Doves appeared on the way to the ferry. On the return journey towards Anacortes, there were again many coastal and seabirds: a Belted Kingfisher, Pigeon Guillemots, Pelagic and Double-crested Cormorants, and several gulls. Back at the Shaw Island ferry terminal, the cormorants and gulls could be photographed particularly well. Four new species in two days, and a surprising variety between forest and sea.
