A drive from Olympic National Park toward the San Juan Islands, with stops in Port Townsend and Anacortes. A Belted Kingfisher already in the morning. The first ferry in particular had many seabirds, including a few Rhinoceros Auklets, a Common Murre and, as a later check of the photographs showed, a Brandt's Cormorant. A Brewer's Blackbird in Oak Harbor was another new species, followed later by a Pine Siskin at Rosario Beach. Purple Martins sat around the nest boxes at the ferry terminal, Barn Swallows flew low over the parking lot, and a female Hooded Merganser with two young was on the water. The second ferry had fewer seabirds, including a few Common Murres, but still a few seals. Then, on one of the San Juan Islands, a very handsome Double-crested Cormorant. All in all a very successful day.
